Thomas J. Bata was presented with an award by the Canada-India Business Council (CIBC) for the contribution he has made to promote India as a trading partner in Canada. The 93-year-old is the son of the founder of the Bata empire, which now employs more than 8,000 people and has over 932 stores worldwide. He was responsible for opening the factory in Konnagar, West Bengal, in 1932 and for moving Bata’s head office from the Czech Republic to Canada before the Second World War ravaged Europe. His son Thomas G Bata is the chairman of the group since 2001.
