VF Corporation has completed the purchase of Timberland, after obtaining regulatory approval from the relevant antitrust authorities. The acquisition will give a boost to the fledgling shoe operations of VF, which is stronger in apparel through brands such as The North Face, and to Timberland's own apparel operations. Patrik Frisk, who has been heading up the European operations of VF's outdoor and action sports division, is going to run Timberland in place of Jeff Swartz, the junior in the family that owned the company, who is leaving. Still based in the U.K., Richard O'Rourke will continue to act as Timberland's vice president of international operations, but he will report to VF's president of international activities, Karl-Heinz Salzburger (more in Sporting Goods Intelligence Europe and its Outdoor Industry Compass).
