World Footwear notes that Belgium remains one of the main trading platforms for footwear in Europe. It produced only one million pairs in 2016, according to the World Footwear Handbook, but in the first half of 2017 it exported 133 million pairs of shoes worth €2.97 billion, up by 3.9 percent in value as compared to the same period of 2016, and 98 percent of the volume went to other countries in the European Union, led by the Netherlands, France and Germany. It imported 166 million pairs worth €1.80 billion during the same period. Apparently most of the activity was performed by trading companies like Cortina.
